FOREST SCHOOL

Forest School benefits children by introducing and creating an understanding of the natural world, and the development of skills and abilities that come from connecting with the environment. Forest school experiences, with their emphasis on exploration, risk-taking, and connection to nature, can foster emotional resilience in children. Through unstructured play in natural settings, children learn to manage stress, build self-confidence, and develop coping skills. Our Forest Schools range provides children with the resources to be able to explore and learn outside throughout the year, experiencing the seasons and changing nature around them.

There are many forms of outdoor education, and all have enormous value, however, Forest School is unique in its reach, delivery and effect. There are six key principles that shape and govern the Forest School ethos as follows:

  1. Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review, links each session.
  2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.
  3. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for wellbeing, development and learning.
  4. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
  5. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.

Forest School learning objectives include:

  • Social skills: Children learn about the consequences of their actions on others through team activities.
  • Communication: Children develop their language skills through sensory experiences.
  • Confidence: Children learn to be independent and demonstrate their confidence.
  • Physical skills: Children develop their gross and fine motor skills and physical stamina.
  • Knowledge and understanding: Children develop an interest in the natural world and respect for the environment.
  • Curiosity: Children develop an enquiring mind.
  • Creativity: Children develop their creativity.
  • Problem solving: Children learn to solve problems.
  • Self-esteem: Children develop their self-esteem.
  • Independence: Children learn to be independent
