What is World Autism Acceptance Week?

World Autism Acceptance Week, is an annual event to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The emphasis on "acceptance" rather than "awareness" highlights the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the unique strengths and abilities of people on the autism spectrum. Instead of merely raising awareness about autism, which focuses on deficits or challenges, the goal of Autism Acceptance Week is to create an environment where individuals with autism are fully accepted as valuable members of society.

Why get involved?

"Autistic people face discrimination and barriers across all sectors of society – in the health and social care systems, in education, in employment, and everywhere in between. It is crucial that autistic people, and their families and carers, can access tailored information, guidance and support to overcome those barriers, along with opportunities to explore their interests, develop skills and build friendships for fulfilled lives." tangle autism

Tangles are handheld fidget toys consisting of interconnected curved sections that can be twisted and manipulated into various shapes. They are often used as sensory tools and are popular among individuals with autism for several reasons:

  1. Sensory stimulation: Many individuals with autism have sensory processing differences and may seek out or avoid certain types of sensory input. Tangles provide tactile and proprioceptive feedback, which can help regulate sensory input and provide a calming effect for those who are sensory-seeking.

  2. Stress relief and anxiety reduction: Manipulating Tangles can serve as a form of stress relief and help reduce anxiety. The repetitive motion of twisting and bending can be soothing and help individuals with autism manage feelings of stress or overwhelm, especially in overwhelming or unfamiliar environments.

  3. Fidgeting aid: Fidgeting can be a natural behaviour for individuals with autism, helping them maintain focus and attention. Tangles provide a discreet and socially acceptable way to engage in fidgeting behavior, allowing individuals to channel excess energy and improve concentration in various settings, such as classrooms or work environments.

  4. Fine motor skills development: Tangles can also be beneficial for improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The manipulation of the interconnected sections requires precision and dexterity, which can help individuals with autism enhance their motor skills through repeated use.

  5. Portable and versatile: Tangles are compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry around and use whenever needed. Their versatility allows individuals with autism to engage with them in various ways, providing a customisable sensory experience tailored to their preferences and needs.

Overall, Tangles and similar fidget toys can be beneficial tools for individuals with autism, offering sensory stimulation, stress relief, improved focus, and opportunities for skill development in a portable and accessible format.
